What Can Trigger a Genital Herpes Outbreak?
People with recurrent genital herpes often try to identify what happened before an outbreak. In my own experience, stress—especially emotional stress—sometimes seemed to coincide with recurrences. Prolonged sexual activity and periods of illness also appeared to be possible factors for me. But many outbreaks had no obvious explanation.
Patterns are personal
Recurrences vary considerably between individuals. Factors commonly discussed in clinical or patient education include illness, stress, friction or local irritation, menstruation, and changes that affect general wellbeing. That does not mean every factor causes an outbreak in every person.
Some popular internet claims—especially rigid lists of foods said to “cause herpes”—are much less certain than they are often presented. Rather than assuming a universal trigger, it can be more useful to observe your own pattern over time.
Keep a simple outbreak record
Consider noting the date, prodromal symptoms, location, severity, duration, recent illness, unusual stress, sleep changes, or local irritation. A record can help you discuss patterns with your healthcare professional and may reveal trends that memory alone misses.
