Therapeutic Genital Herpes Vaccine Research

For many years, therapeutic HSV vaccines have aimed to help people who already carry the virus by reducing recurrences, viral shedding, or both. The history is full of promising early programs that did not ultimately become approved therapies, which is why new results need to be interpreted carefully.

Why old vaccine news can be misleading

My original Portuguese blog followed programs such as GEN-003 and the former Admedus HSV-2 vaccine in real time. Those posts remain useful as a historical record, but they should not be read as descriptions of today's active pipeline. Early-stage success does not guarantee that a candidate will complete development.

Newer approaches

More recent therapeutic vaccine work has included mRNA-based approaches. Early clinical results can tell us about safety, immune responses, recurrence patterns, and viral shedding, but larger and longer studies are needed before a candidate can be considered established therapy.

This page will be updated as programs advance or stop, so that historical research is clearly separated from current development.

Editorial policy: Research updates on this site distinguish preliminary findings from approved treatments and identify discontinued or historical programs as such.
